There are many wonderful cultural experiences to be found in Gainesville, Florida. Between art festivals, history museums, and the University of Florida, which offers a variety of artist/lecture opportunities and performance events for locals, it’s easy to find an experience to suit any interest. One place to go to see exceptional performing arts is the Hippodrome Theatre, or as it’s more popularly referred to as, The Hipp.
For those who have never been to The Hipp, and would like to learn more about its significance to the Gainesville community, here are some facts:
- It was founded in 1972 by six artists with the goal of presenting the best in contemporary theater, finding a home in a converted hardware/convenience store.
- Eventually, after many years of successful shows and events, it moved to downtown Gainesville in the notable Federal Building, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
- It features a 266-seat thrust-stage main stage theatre, an 80-seat cinema space, and an art gallery.
- It provides arts education in the form of classes, camps, in-school programs, and workshops.
- It serves more than a quarter of a million patrons annually.
The Hipp is a wonderful place to take in a professionally acted play, enjoy a foreign film in a vintage cinema, or sign up for a class or workshop. It’s even possible to rent the theatre to host a party, film screening, or lecture.
