Bellamay Grand residents who are interested in learning more about the natural history of Florida should consider a day trip to the Florida Museum of Natural History. It is located on the outskirts of the University of Florida campus, in the UF Cultural Plaza, which is just four short miles from our apartments. As Florida’s official state-sponsored and chartered natural history museum, the Florida Museum of Natural History features a myriad of public exhibits that focus on the flora, fauna, fossils, and historic people of Florida for all visitors to see.

There are many wonderful exhibits to peruse, including:

Butterfly Rainforest – Features hundreds of butterflies, turtles, fish, and birds from all around the world, flying around in a lush tropical landscape, complete with waterfalls and colorful plants. And with knowledgeable staff ready to answer any questions and provide more detail about the creatures, it is a must-see exhibit.
Florida Fossils – Take a peek through Florida’s history with this internationally acclaimed fossil collection, encapsulating the last 65 million years of the Earth’s history.
Discovery Room – The perfect play area for children. This hands-on room provides a variety of science resources to thrill and excite their little minds. Between discovery drawers filled with natural objects (such as shells, butterflies, and manatee bones), wind tunnels, and a building corner to explore balance, motion, and gravity, children will have a wild time investigating this area.
Walking Trails – At the end of the visit, museum goers can enjoy a variety of peaceful, self-guided nature trails that showcase three upland ecosystems and an ecologically engineered stormwater retention basin.
