Learning About Ballet in our Gainesville, FL, Apartments
Ballet is a type of performance dance that originated in the 15th century in the Italian Renaissance courts. Since then, it has grown in popularity across the world, becoming its own form of dance that has its own terminology (based off the French language) and influencing many different dance genres.
There are three styles of ballet:
- Classical ballet – Often, when people think about ballet, this is the style that most frequently comes to mind. It is characterized by graceful, flowing movements, elaborate sets and costumes, an emphasis on story and narrative, and using classical steps, such as turn-out of the legs and pointe work. The Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet are two popular classical ballet acts.
- Neo-classical ballet – This style of ballet was introduced in the 20th century and includes increased speed, energy, and attack. It’s different from classical ballet in the design (simple sets and costumes) and that it features a non-linear narrative.
- Contemporary ballet – This style has been influenced by modern dance and features floor work, turn-in of the legs, greater range of movement and body line, and, in some cases, bare feet.
Now that you’re more familiar with the different styles of ballet, it will help you understand which style you’re experiencing the next time you see a ballet performance. Take note of the set design, feet placement, and energy of the dancers.
